About Jan Van Bijlert

One of the Utrecht Caravaggisti, this seventeenth-century Dutch painter spent formative years in Rome absorbing the dramatic light and theatrical half-length figures that defined Caravaggio's followers. Back in Utrecht by 1625, he co-founded the painters' guild Bentvueghels and later helped establish the Schildersconvent, becoming a central figure in the city's artistic life alongside Honthorst and Terbrugghen. His range moved between candlelit genre scenes of musicians and revellers and smoother mythological subjects aimed at sophisticated patrons. The work rewards viewers who like their figures close, lit from a single warm source, and caught mid-gesture - a quieter cousin to the louder Baroque drama happening south of the Alps.
