About Horace Bundy

Few American folk painters captured the rising middle class of mid-nineteenth-century New England with quite the same crisp, unvarnished directness. A Vermont-based itinerant portraitist working from the 1830s into the 1850s, he traveled between small towns painting lawyers, merchants, and farming families who wanted a likeness but couldn't reach a city studio. His sitters meet the viewer with sober, level gazes, rendered in the flat planes and sharp linear precision typical of self-taught painters of the period. For collectors drawn to early American portraiture, his work offers something contemporary portrait photography rarely manages: a sitter who looks entirely, stubbornly themselves.
