About Rogier Van Der Weyden

One of the towering figures of Early Netherlandish painting, he worked in fifteenth-century Brussels as the city's official painter and shaped Northern European art for generations after his death in 1464. Where his contemporary Jan van Eyck pursued luminous optical realism, he pushed in a different direction: spare composition, restrained gesture, and an unflinching attention to human emotion. His portraits in particular distill a sitter to essentials, the face set against a plain ground, the hands quietly eloquent. For a modern viewer, the appeal is the stillness.
