About Winold Reiss

A German-born modernist who landed in New York in 1913, he brought Bauhaus-adjacent geometric rigor to American commercial design just as Art Deco was finding its voice. He moved fluidly between disciplines, designing restaurant interiors, theater spaces, and magazine covers while building a serious portrait practice focused on Harlem Renaissance figures and Indigenous subjects of the Northern Plains. His 1925 Survey Graphic issue on Harlem, designed alongside Alain Locke, helped define the visual identity of the New Negro movement. For collectors today, his graphic work sits at the intersection of European modernism and American Jazz Age design - flat planes, confident color, and a draftsman's discipline behind every line.
