About Arthur Wardle
Few Victorian animal painters moved as fluently between the domestic and the wild as this self-taught Londoner, who exhibited at the Royal Academy from the age of sixteen and kept showing there for the next half-century. Born in 1864, he built his reputation on sporting dogs - terriers, setters, gun dogs caught mid-point - before turning to the big cats and exotic predators that made his later career. He worked in both oil and pastel, with a draftsman's eye for musculature and a real feel for animal psychology. The appeal now is the same as it was then: he painted animals as individuals, not specimens.
