About Ernest Lawson

Among the American Impressionists, he was the one who built paint like masonry. Thick, encrusted surfaces, often described in his own time as looking like crushed jewels, gave his river views and city corners a weight that softer Impressionism rarely achieved. A member of The Eight, the group of urban realists who exhibited together in 1908 against the conservative National Academy, he brought a landscape painter's sensibility to gritty Manhattan subjects like the Harlem River and Washington Square. For viewers drawn to American Impressionism but tired of its prettier conventions, his work offers something heartier, more tactile, and decidedly more New York.
