About Ralph W. Stackpole

A San Francisco sculptor and painter who became one of the leading figures of California modernism in the 1920s and 30s, working in stone, fresco, and oil with equal authority. Born in Oregon in 1885, he trained in Paris, befriended Diego Rivera, and helped bring Mexican muralism north, most visibly through his monumental figures at the San Francisco Stock Exchange. His painted portraits carry the same sculptural weight as his carvings, with simplified planes and a quiet, almost stoic presence. For viewers drawn to early American modernism with a West Coast accent, his figurative work offers strength without sentimentality and a directness that still reads as contemporary.
