About Georges Pierre Seurat
The inventor of Pointillism built his paintings dot by dot, applying pure pigment in tiny touches and letting the viewer's eye do the mixing. Trained in the academic tradition in Paris but restless within it, he spent two years on A Sunday on La Grande Jatte (1884-86), turning a Parisian leisure scene into a quiet revolution that gave the Post-Impressionists their most rigorous theorist. He died at 31, leaving only seven major canvases, including the unfinished Circus. The appeal now is the strange stillness of it - figures frozen in luminous suspension, the surface alive with vibration when you step close.
