About Frank Johnston

One of the original seven who formed Canada's Group of Seven in 1920, this Toronto-born painter actually parted ways with the collective just four years later, preferring his own quieter direction. Trained at the Art Students League in New York and shaped by his time documenting the Algoma wilderness alongside Lawren Harris and J.E.H. MacDonald, he developed a tempera technique that gave his northern landscapes an almost luminous stillness, distinct from the bolder brushwork of his peers. His winter scenes and fire-scarred forests reward slow looking - they hold a kind of meditative weight that suits a room where you actually want to sit and think.
