About Rex Slinkard

Among the early California modernists, few had a sensibility as inward-turning and lyrical as this short-lived painter from Indiana. Working in the years just before the First World War, he absorbed the symbolist currents flowing through Robert Henri's circle and translated them into something quieter—dreamlike pastoral scenes, allegorical figures, landscapes that feel half-remembered rather than observed. He died in 1918 at thirty-one, leaving a small body of work that his friends, including the poet Sara Bard Field, championed for decades afterward. For collectors drawn to the meditative side of American modernism—Arthur B. Davies, early Marsden Hartley—his canvases reward slow looking and quiet rooms.
