About Konstantin Egorovich Makovsky

Few nineteenth-century Russian painters knew how to stage a scene quite like this one. Trained at the Moscow School of Painting and an early member of the Peredvizhniki, the Wanderers who broke from the Imperial Academy in 1863, he eventually drifted toward something more opulent: lush historical tableaux, society portraits, and folkloric subjects rendered with theatrical lighting and brushwork that flatters silk, skin, and firelight in equal measure. By the 1880s he was among the highest-paid portraitists in Russia, courted by tsars and American collectors alike. His paintings still hold a viewer the way good cinema does, all atmosphere and human presence.
