About Claude Joseph Vernet

Few eighteenth-century painters understood weather quite like this one. A French marine and landscape painter born in Avignon in 1714, he spent nearly two decades in Rome absorbing the influence of Claude Lorrain before Louis XV summoned him home with a remarkable commission: a series of paintings depicting the ports of France, executed across the 1750s and 60s. His specialty was atmosphere - the silver hush of moonlight on water, the sudden violence of a coastal storm, the gold haze of a fisherman's dawn.
