About Tina Blau

One of the central figures of Austrian Stimmungsimpressionismus, or "mood impressionism," she brought a loose, light-saturated brushwork to Viennese landscape painting at a moment when academic naturalism still dominated. Born in 1845, she trained partly in Munich under Wilhelm Lindenschmit and built her reputation with the monumental Spring in the Prater (1882), which established her as a peer of Emil Jakob Schindler. Largely shut out of the male-dominated academies, she co-founded a women's art school in Vienna in 1897. Her canal scenes, street corners, and atelier interiors still read as remarkably modern - quietly observed, atmospheric, and full of working painter's intelligence.
