About Fede Galizia

One of the earliest practitioners of Italian still life, she was painting fruit on tabletops before the genre even had a settled name. Born in Milan around 1578 and trained by her father, the miniaturist Nunzio Galizia, she was producing accomplished portraits as a teenager and turned to still life by her early twenties - work that predates Caravaggio's famous basket and helped establish the Lombard tradition of restrained, almost devotional fruit painting. Her compositions are quiet things: a few peaches, a silver dish, light falling cleanly across porcelain. For contemporary viewers, they offer something increasingly rare - stillness that rewards long looking.
