About George Turner

Often called the John Constable of the Midlands, this nineteenth-century English painter built his reputation on the quiet pastoral country of Derbyshire, where he lived and worked for most of his life. Born in 1841 in Cromford, he painted the lanes, farms, and village scenes around Barrow-on-Trent with a steady naturalism that owed plenty to Constable but kept its own unhurried character. His views of Dovedale and the Trent valley remain the cornerstone of his catalogue, alongside the occasional Venetian scene from later travels. For a contemporary viewer, his landscapes offer something increasingly rare: an unsentimental record of rural England before the twentieth century arrived.
