About Anton Mauve

A leading figure of the Hague School, this nineteenth-century Dutch painter built his reputation on muted, silvery landscapes populated by shepherds, cattle, and working horses moving through low coastal light. Trained alongside the Maris brothers and active from the 1860s until his death in 1888, he favored a restrained palette of greys, soft greens, and sandy ochres that set him apart from the brighter Impressionists working in France at the same moment. He was also Van Gogh's cousin by marriage and briefly his teacher. For viewers drawn to quiet, atmospheric scenes rather than spectacle, his work remains some of the most contemplative landscape painting of the period.
