About Alvan Fisher
Among the first American painters to treat landscape as a serious subject in its own right, this Massachusetts-born artist helped clear the ground for the Hudson River School that would follow. Working in the 1810s and 1820s, he turned away from the portraiture that paid most American painters of the era and headed instead toward Niagara, the White Mountains, and rural New England, painting nature with a romantic eye trained partly by his travels in Europe. For a contemporary viewer, his Niagara scenes carry the charge of early American wonder at the continent's scale, before the falls became a postcard.
