About Jens Juel

Working in late eighteenth-century Denmark, this is the painter who effectively defined Danish portraiture for a generation. Trained in Hamburg and seasoned by years in Rome, Dresden, and Paris, he returned to Copenhagen in 1780 and was soon appointed court painter, capturing nearly everyone of consequence in Danish society until his death in 1802. His sensibility sits at the hinge between Rococo lightness and early Romantic feeling, with a particular gift for the unguarded moment, the precise turn of a wrist, the texture of a child's skin. The preparatory studies are quietly remarkable, treating a neck or a leg with the same seriousness as a face.
