About Herbert Crowley

Few early-twentieth-century illustrators vanished from public view as completely as this English-born draftsman, whose intricate pen-and-ink fantasies were rediscovered only in recent decades. Active in the 1910s, he produced the surreal Sunday comic strip The Wigglemuch for the New York Herald in 1910, alongside symbolist drawings of impossible architecture, lotus-strewn seas, and hooded figures in twilight gardens. His work sat somewhere between Arthur Rackham's fairy-tale precision and the proto-surrealism of Alfred Kubin, with a private mythology all his own. For viewers drawn to detailed worldbuilding, visionary landscapes, and the strange edge of Edwardian fantasy illustration, his rediscovered drawings reward long looking.
