About Thomas Gainsborough

One of the founding members of the Royal Academy in 1768, he spent his career torn between the portraits that paid the bills and the landscapes he actually loved. That tension is why his society portraits feel different from those of his rival Joshua Reynolds: looser brushwork, feathered edges, sitters placed in airy outdoor settings rather than stiff interiors. He worked in Suffolk, Bath, and finally London, painting the Georgian elite with a lightness of touch that anticipated the Romantics by a generation. For a contemporary viewer, his portraits offer something rare in 18th-century painting: real atmosphere, real weather, real people who happen to be wearing silk.
