About Alfred De Breanski

Few Victorian landscapists understood the Scottish Highlands quite the way he did. Born in London in 1852 to a Polish émigré father, he made his name painting the glens, lochs and river valleys of Scotland, Wales and the Thames Valley with a warm, glowing palette that owed something to Turner and rather more to his own long walks through the terrain. He exhibited at the Royal Academy from the age of twenty and remained productive until his death in 1928, often working alongside his brothers, also painters. His Highland scenes still read beautifully today: atmospheric, golden-hour landscapes that pull a room toward stillness rather than noise.
