Active in Naples in the second quarter of the seventeenth century, this anonymous Caravaggesque painter takes his name of convenience from a striking nocturnal Annunciation to the Shepherds now in the Capodimonte. Scholars have long debated his identity, with some attributing the hand to the young Bernardo Cavallino or to Juan Do, while others maintain he stands apart as a distinct personality within the circle of Jusepe de Ribera. His work is marked by dense shadow, plain Neapolitan faces, and a tender realism applied to monks, beggars, and saints alike.
