About Willem Van De Velde Ii

Few painters have ever understood the sea the way this seventeenth-century Dutchman did. Born in Leiden in 1633 and trained by his father, the elder Willem van de Velde, he turned marine painting into something close to journalism: ships rendered with the structural accuracy of a shipwright, weather observed with a sailor's eye. After the Anglo-Dutch wars, he and his father crossed to England in 1672 to work for Charles II, effectively founding the British tradition of marine art that would later shape Turner. For a contemporary viewer, the appeal is the drama - light, wind, and water held in perfect tension.
