About Maximilien Luce

Among the second wave of Neo-Impressionists, he was the one who took Seurat's pointillist method off the boulevards and into the foundries, rail yards, and working-class districts of Paris and Charleroi. Born in 1858, he trained as a wood engraver before falling in with Pissarro, Signac, and the anarchist circles of the 1890s - a political commitment that shaped his subject matter for decades. His later work loosened the dot into broader, sunnier brushwork, particularly in his bathers and landscapes from the Mediterranean coast. The result is a body of work that holds rare ground between rigorous color theory and genuine human sympathy.
