About Gilbert Stuart

Few painters have shaped how a nation pictures itself quite like the man who gave America the face of George Washington. Working in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, this Rhode Island-born portraitist trained in London under Benjamin West and absorbed the loose, atmospheric brushwork of Gainsborough and Reynolds before returning home to paint the founding generation. His unfinished Athenaeum portrait of Washington became the source image for the dollar bill, ensuring his style would outlive him in every American pocket. The portraits reward close looking: pink-flushed cheeks, alert eyes, and a directness that makes eighteenth-century sitters feel surprisingly present on a modern wall.
