About Willard Leroy Metcalf

One of the original Ten American Painters who broke from the National Academy in 1898, he brought a distinctly New England sensibility to American Impressionism. Trained in Boston and then at the Académie Julian in Paris, he spent time at Giverny in the 1880s alongside Theodore Robinson and John Leslie Breck, absorbing the broken color and atmospheric light that would define his later career. By the 1900s he had turned almost entirely to the rural Northeast, painting Vermont and Connecticut hillsides through every season. His landscapes hold up because they refuse prettiness for something quieter: a real attention to weather, hour, and place.
