About Jervis Mcentee

A second-generation Hudson River School painter, Jervis McEntee built his reputation on the quieter end of American landscape - the muted browns and grays of late autumn and early winter, painted with an honesty his more theatrical contemporaries often avoided. Born in Rondout, New York in 1828, he studied under Frederic Church and kept a studio in the famous Tenth Street Studio Building alongside Sanford Gifford and Worthington Whittredge, both close friends. His diaries remain one of the best firsthand accounts of New York's nineteenth-century art world. For collectors drawn to subdued, contemplative landscape over grand spectacle, McEntee's autumnal scenes still hold their ground.
