About Murillo

Among the Spanish Golden Age painters, Bartolomé Esteban Murillo (1617-1682) stands apart for the soft-edged tenderness he brought to religious subjects that his contemporaries painted with austere intensity. Working in Seville alongside Velázquez and Zurbarán, he developed what came to be called the estilo vaporoso, a hazy, atmospheric handling of light that gave his Madonnas, street children, and Annunciations their distinctive warmth. He was a founding member of the Seville Academy of Art in 1660. For viewers today, Murillo offers Baroque devotion without the severity, paintings that feel intimate and inviting rather than imposing, well-suited to rooms meant for reflection or quiet conversation.
