About Alejandro De Riquer

One of the central figures of Catalan Modernisme, this Barcelona-born artist (1856-1920) worked at the intersection of poster design, painting, and decorative arts during the movement's peak in the 1890s. His commercial work for firms like Escofet helped define the visual language of turn-of-the-century Barcelona, drawing on Pre-Raphaelite influence and the curving line of Mucha while keeping a distinctly Catalan symbolist mood - dreamy female figures, dense floral borders, careful typography integrated into the image itself. For collectors drawn to Art Nouveau but tired of seeing the same Parisian names, his posters offer the southern, Mediterranean wing of the movement: warmer, more literary, quietly strange.
