About Gustav Sohon

Few nineteenth-century artists left a more useful visual record of the Northern Rockies than this Prussian-born draftsman, who arrived in America as a teenager and enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1852. Assigned to Isaac Stevens' Pacific Railroad Survey, he sketched the Blackfoot, Flathead, and Nez Perce delegations at the 1855 treaty councils, producing portraits and landscapes that remain primary documents of a vanishing world. Trained in the field rather than the academy, he worked with a quiet, observational accuracy that set him apart from more theatrical frontier illustrators. For collectors drawn to authentic Western history, his drawings carry the weight of someone who was actually there.
