About Myron G Barlow

Born in Ionia, Michigan in 1873, this American painter built his reputation on quiet interiors populated by Dutch peasant women - figures caught mending, reading, or sitting by firelight in the cottages of Étaples, where he settled for much of his working life. He trained at the Art Institute of Chicago before continuing his studies in Paris under Jean-Léon Gérôme, and the academic grounding shows in his careful draughtsmanship and restrained palette. Working in the wake of the Hague School and alongside the American expatriate community in France, he found a tonal stillness that rewards slow looking. His genre scenes still feel intimate rather than sentimental - small lives observed with real attention.
