About Olga Boznanska

Among the most distinctive Polish portraitists of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, she built her reputation on a muted, almost ghostly palette and a refusal to flatter. Born in Kraków in 1865 and trained in Munich before settling in Paris, she spent decades working from a studio on rue Vaugirard, painting on cardboard to achieve the soft, granular surfaces that became her signature. Her sitters - children in school uniforms, women in pale dresses - emerge from shadowed grounds with a psychological weight rare for the period. For a contemporary room, her portraits offer something quiet and watchful, the opposite of decorative.
