About Gerrit Van Honthorst

Few painters understood candlelight the way this Dutchman did. Trained in Utrecht and sharpened by a long stay in Rome in the 1610s, he absorbed Caravaggio's drama so completely that Italians nicknamed him Gherardo delle Notti—Gerard of the Nights—for his theatrical nocturnes lit by a single hidden flame. Back in the Netherlands he became the leading figure of the Utrecht Caravaggisti, painting sacred subjects, merry concerts, and balcony revelers with the same warm, raking glow, before later courting royal patrons in The Hague and London. The appeal now is that intimate firelight: scenes that pull a viewer close, quiet and human even at their most dramatic.
