About George Grosz
Few artists wielded a pen quite so much like a scalpel. A founding figure of Berlin Dada and a central voice of the Neue Sachlichkeit movement, he turned the Weimar Republic's profiteers, generals, and bourgeois grotesques into some of the sharpest political satire of the twentieth century. Born in 1893, he fled Nazi Germany for New York in 1933, where his work softened into something more allegorical, even mournful, though never quite tame. His drawings still feel uncomfortably current - acid-line caricatures of power and excess that read less like history than like a warning held up to the present.
