About Jean Francois De Troy

Few painters captured the social theater of early eighteenth-century Paris with the eye De Troy brought to it. Born in 1679 and trained by his father François, he became the master of the tableau de mode - intimate, beautifully dressed scenes of aristocrats reading, flirting, and assembling for the evening, painted with a silken handling of fabric that rivals Watteau. He moved easily between these genre pieces, large mythological canvases, and portraiture, eventually directing the French Academy in Rome from 1738 until his death in 1752. For modern eyes, his work offers a window into Rococo elegance that feels observed rather than staged - decorative, yes, but quietly human.
