About Georges Barbier

Few illustrators caught the lacquered glamour of 1920s Paris quite like this French designer, whose precise linework and saturated palette helped define the Art Deco look before the term even existed. Trained at the École des Beaux-Arts and active from the 1910s until his death in 1932, he produced fashion plates for Gazette du Bon Ton, costume designs for the Folies Bergère, and illustrations for luxury editions of Verlaine and Baudelaire. His pochoir prints distill the Jazz Age into something stylized and slightly theatrical, all crisp silhouettes and gilded ornament. For collectors drawn to early twentieth-century elegance, his images remain among the period's most distinctive.
