About Robert P
Better known as Robert Antoine Pinchon, this French Post-Impressionist spent his career painting the Seine valley around Rouen, working in a loose, vibrating brushstroke that owed as much to Sisley as to Monet. Born in 1886, he was a school friend of Marcel Duchamp and ran in the same Norman circles as Pierre Dumont and the École de Rouen, though he stayed loyal to plein-air landscape long after his peers moved on. His summer river scenes have a quiet, unfussy intelligence about light and weather that rewards slow looking, and they sit comfortably in a room without ever demanding the conversation.
