About Helen Hyde

Among the small group of American printmakers who fell under the spell of Japan at the turn of the twentieth century, she went further than most - actually moving to Tokyo in 1903 and studying directly with Japanese carvers and printers. Trained first in San Francisco and Paris, she adopted the full ukiyo-e workshop method, designing color woodblocks that her collaborators cut and printed in the traditional manner. Her subjects, often Japanese mothers and children rendered with quiet affection, sit at an interesting crossroads of Western draftsmanship and Meiji-era craft. For collectors drawn to early Japonisme, her prints offer something rarer than imitation: genuine cross-cultural apprenticeship.
