About Cropsey Jasper Francis

Among the second generation of Hudson River School painters, he was the one who truly understood autumn. Where Thomas Cole reached for the sublime and Frederic Church chased global grandeur, Cropsey (1823–1900) made the American fall his signature subject, painting the crimson and gold of New York and New Jersey woodlands with a botanist's precision and a romantic's eye for light. Trained as an architect before turning to landscape, he carried that structural discipline into his compositions, anchoring drifts of foliage against carefully observed mountains and river valleys. For viewers drawn to seasonal warmth and the early American landscape tradition, his work still reads as remarkably alive.
