About Henry Mayer

Best known as a political cartoonist whose pen could turn an editorial page into a manifesto, this German-born American illustrator made his name in the early twentieth century working for Puck, Harper's Weekly, and the New York papers. His 1915 suffrage cartoon, depicting a torch-bearing woman striding across the western states toward the still-darkened East, became one of the defining images of the movement and remains the work most closely associated with him. The graphic clarity is what holds up today: a confident allegorical figure, bold contour, and a composition that reads instantly. It is propaganda art at its most lucid and least apologetic.
