About Hubert Robert

Few painters loved a crumbling column quite like this eighteenth-century Frenchman, who built an entire career on the poetic decay of classical architecture. Born in Paris in 1733, he spent eleven formative years in Rome alongside Fragonard and Piranesi, sketching the Forum, the Colosseum, and every overgrown ruin he could find. The obsession stuck. Back in France he became Garden Designer to the King, reimagining Versailles and earning the nickname "Robert des Ruines." His paintings sit at the hinge between Rococo charm and Romantic melancholy, suggesting that even empires soften into landscape. For viewers drawn to atmosphere, scale, and a quiet sense of time passing, his vision still holds.
