About Maurice Cullen
Few painters caught the particular bite of a Canadian winter the way this Newfoundland-born Impressionist did. Trained in Paris in the 1890s alongside the generation that absorbed Monet and Pissarro firsthand, he brought that vocabulary of broken colour and shifting light back to Quebec and turned it on snow - the lavender shadows under birches, the pink wash of late afternoon on the St. Lawrence, the dry sparkle of hoar frost on a still morning. Active from the 1890s through the 1930s, he helped clear the path for the Group of Seven. His winter scenes still feel cold in the best way - quiet, exact, and lit from within.
