About Henry Farny

Few nineteenth-century painters captured the American West with the quiet documentary precision of this French-born Cincinnati artist, whose late-career gouaches and watercolors of Plains life set him apart from the romantic theatrics of his contemporaries. Trained in Düsseldorf and Munich, he turned to Western subjects in the 1880s after several trips to the Dakotas and Montana, where he sketched among the Sioux and built a meticulous archive of artifacts and photographs that fed his studio work for decades. His small-scale, tonal compositions reward close looking, trading drama for the cold light of a winter camp or the patience of a hunter at rest.
