About Natures

Few American painters did more to teach the young republic how to look at its own landscape than Thomas Doughty. Working in the 1820s and 30s, he helped lay the groundwork for what would become the Hudson River School, trading the heroic European tradition for something quieter: misty inlets, soft middle-distance hills, a lone figure dwarfed by woodland. Self-taught and originally a Philadelphia leather merchant, he turned to painting full-time in 1820 and became one of the first Americans to make a living strictly from landscape. His pastoral views still read as a kind of refuge - unhurried, atmospheric, and entirely at home in a contemplative room.
