About John Frederick Kensett

A central figure in the second generation of the Hudson River School, he pushed American landscape painting toward something quieter and stranger than his predecessors attempted. By the 1850s and 60s, his coastal scenes and mountain views had moved away from the dramatic, operatic mode of Thomas Cole toward a stripped-down luminism — vast skies, glassy water, and a near-spiritual stillness that anticipates twentieth-century minimalism by nearly a century. Born in Connecticut in 1816, he trained as an engraver before studying in Europe alongside Asher B. Durand. The restraint in his work, that sense of light doing almost all the talking, is what makes it feel surprisingly modern on a contemporary wall.
