About Artemisia Gentileschi

Born in Rome in 1593, she was the most accomplished follower of Caravaggio in her generation, and the first woman admitted to Florence's Accademia delle Arti del Disegno. Her command of tenebrism - that knife-edge contrast between deep shadow and a single hot light source - matched her teacher Caravaggio's, but she pushed the drama further, particularly in her treatment of biblical heroines who fight back. Judith, Susanna, Jael: women rendered with muscular conviction rather than decorative passivity. For a contemporary viewer, her paintings hit twice - first as superb Baroque draftsmanship, then as something stranger and more modern, a 17th-century woman painting female agency with absolute technical authority.
