About Adolfo Hohenstein

Often called the father of Italian poster art, this German-born designer (1854–1928) shaped the visual language of Belle Époque Italy from his studio in Milan. As art director at Ricordi, the music publisher behind Puccini and Verdi, he produced advertising lithographs for opera premieres and industrial clients alike, fusing Liberty-style ornament with theatrical staging and a draftsman's precision. His compositions borrowed from Symbolist painting and pre-Raphaelite drapery, but they sold sulfur, insurance, and operas with equal flair. For collectors drawn to turn-of-the-century graphic design, his prints offer a rare bridge between fine-art illustration and the birth of modern advertising.
