About Gerard Ter Borch The Younger

Few Dutch Golden Age painters caught the hush of a private moment quite like he did. Working in the mid-seventeenth century, he made a specialty of small-scale genre scenes where satin, silver, and skin all seemed to absorb the same quiet light. His handling of fabric, particularly white satin, became a benchmark other painters openly imitated, Vermeer among those who studied his compositions closely. He also painted portraits with unusual psychological restraint, treating sitters as if caught mid-thought rather than posed.
