About Aelbert Cuyp

Few painters understood golden light the way this seventeenth-century Dordrecht master did. Working primarily between the 1640s and 1660s, he absorbed the warm, low Italian sun secondhand—through Jan Both and the Dutch Italianates—and applied it to the cattle, riverbanks, and broad skies of his own Netherlandish countryside. The result is a hybrid that influenced English landscape painting profoundly; both Turner and Constable studied him closely. Beyond the pastoral scenes that made his name, he was also a capable portraitist of Dordrecht's merchant families. His landscapes still read as quietly radical: ordinary herdsmen bathed in a light usually reserved for saints.
