About Georges Valmier

Few French Cubists moved as fluidly between austerity and pure chromatic joy. Trained at the École des Beaux-Arts under Luc-Olivier Merson, he absorbed Cézanne before falling in with the Section d'Or circle around 1919, exhibiting alongside Gleizes, Metzinger, and Léger at Léonce Rosenberg's Galerie de l'Effort Moderne. By the late 1920s his canvases had loosened into rhythmic, almost musical arrangements of saturated color and curving geometry, work that anticipated the Abstraction-Création movement he joined in 1932. That late period, with its bright, decorative confidence, is what draws collectors now: paintings that feel modern without the chill, geometric without losing their pulse.
